It's Earth Week 2010

I, personally, do not consider myself a green person...maybe closer to an aquamarine but I am trying. I don't know when I became environmentally conscious but it wasn't until I visited my family that I realized how far I've come (whole other story). One day it's a water bottle, next thing you know I'm learning to make solar panels. (No joke!) I understand it's pretty unrealistic to ask someone to change 100% no matter how benevolent the outcome. And tho, it true, that these things take time and commitment, every little bit counts. No matter how small, it matters. No matter how long, it's shorter than never. Do your part. Take baby steps or snail pace but a mini start will lead to great changes in years to come.

Small changes, big results. I believe in you!
1. Recycle.
2. Plant a tree.
3. Buy locally.
5. Showers instead of baths. Or shower with a friend. :)
6. Use re-usable shopping bag and recycle/avoid plastic bags.
7. Air dry your clothes.
8. Unplug unused electronics
9. Use CFL (compact fluorescent bulbs)
10. Wash clothes in cold water; use biodegradable detergents that are manufactured for this use.
11. Take public transportation.
12. Carpool
13. Bike.
14. Walk.
15. Buy Energy Star appliances.
16. Buy energy efficient cars.

We've been preparing for this Ewe themed baby shower for quite a few weeks now. Finally narrowing it down to a pastel green color scheme since the mother isn't a pink kinda gal. The pre-ordered invitation had a sweet little ewe on it so we just ran with it. We wanted this co-ed shower to be fun and entertaining so we set up 2 task stations where guests can keep busy and still mingle while the rest of the guests arrives. After completing the tasks, they got a raffle ticket for a prize drawing.

In the first station, we asked guests to give advice to the new parents by signing these cute onesies we created and then we hung them up on clothesline as decoration. This way everyone can view and share the advice. In the second station, guests were asked to sign diapers. When the diapers are used later, the couple will be delighted to see the different comments from their friends and family.

Valentines gets a bad rep. When people say its a holiday for the commercialism, I say to those people, it's an easy way out of making an effort. No one is telling you to buy cards and candies and flowers or whatever. It's a day to say I love you to the people you care about. Don't be a Valentine scrooge. You can do it anyway you like, a simple gesture, a sincere hug and kiss, a show of appreciation, a reminder however big or small. Happy Valentine, won't you be mine?

Anyone who knows me knows that I love LOVE holidays. It's exactly the reason why I'm in this business. I love celebrating. I love parties. I love people getting together and creating good times.

That said, Lunar New Year is one of my fav. Just to share a bit of how fabulous we Chinese can party it up, here's a little bit of history for you. It's a 15 day celebration that involves families, friends,sticky cakes, lucky candy, temples, new clothes, red packets, fireworks, dragon dance, food, thanksgiving, gifts, togetherness tray, pomelos, tangerines, lantern parades, pistachios, parties, Tiger!, I can go on and on. 2010 is the Year of the Tiger. It's said that babies born during this year will take on some characteristic of the courageous Tiger.

Dragon dancing and firecrackers are to scare away all the evils for the coming year.

City bakery is having their annual hot chocolate festival for the entire month of February. We were in the area so decided to check out the flava of the day. Chinese cinnamon hot chocolate.
So good. I mean soooooo good.

Our found the Restaurant week food truck parked outside on 5th avenue and 19th street.

This is a really cute store/gallery. It draws your attention the second you glimpse it. You can't help but be drawn to peek into the window trying to figure out what this place is all about. They specializing only in these decorative hearts, and measures about 5 inches high and 5 inches wide and 1½ inches at the deepest point. Theirs goal? Hoping to change the shape of the world one heart at a time.

We love hearing what people have to say about our products and that's why we get so excited when we do receive feedbacks from people. We recently got another new feedback on etsy and we were overjoyed that we have another satisfied customer. Our customized rubik's cube that we were promoting over the holidays did pretty well. Not only were our cubes popular but our diaper cakes have seemed to make a comeback too! We are so glad that the cubes did well and that our customers are happy.

Congratulations to all who ran the NYC marathon! Karen and I both went to cheer on all the runners Sunday. It was a great event with great weather. Way to go runners!!

The lovely ladies of Station0034 attended the Bizbash Expo this Wednesday. Nothing exciting or new really but it's always good to refresh your vendor contacts and memory on what's out there. The one prevalent topic on everyone's mind this season is the economic climate. The recession has effected everyone and it shows. Every speech contained money saving, cost effective ideas which lead to vendors using reusable, recyclable green products. Here's some pictures from the event.

I've been contemplating on whether this incident deserved a post and the answer obviously is yes! Yes, yes, yes! Kate's Paperie was once known for their huge selection of paper. However, this is not the case anymore...what happened kate? What happened to all your paper? We were extremely disappointed when we went there last night to try to buy some stationary for a save-the-date project we are working on currently. To our dismay we couldn't find the right colored paper. How can a card and stationary place downsize on the selection of paper they offer to their customers. I just don't understand. On the upside, Kate's Paperie is still as cute as ever with all it's small gifts to buy.

Bye, bye ginormous selection of paper.

hors d'oeuvres

Last Thursday 10/8, Monica and I attended the BizBash Hors d'Oeuvres House event at Skylight West, part of the Food Network New York City Wine & Food Festival. It was extremely fun as all things food are. Although everything was delicious I especially like Diane Gordon's wild mushroom risotto canapes. (Excuse me, I'm salivating). Thomas Preti's selections won our best service rank. Their food was very good as well but they were the energizer bunny of service. After all the other caterers ran out of food, theirs kept going and going and going. Diane Gordon offered a pear-elderflower cocktail with Tito's vodka which was fantastic! As for the space, Skylight West offered us 3 levels of party. The roof deck was the quintessential "New York" rooftop, enough said. Lastly, I must add, the hired staff to work the party were by eye5 who were beautiful (excuse me, I'm salivating). Here are some visuals.

Our latest project involves an old time favorite, the Rubik's cube. Oh so many hours and days went into this when I was little. It seems I was a lot smarter back then because I can't seem to solve the damn thing anymore. Patience is also against me these days. Here's our finished project.
